THE HEART OF GOD
Few people have understood the heart of God as George MacDonald did. In his book The Gentleman's Choice, he wrote of the main character,
She had not begun to see that God is the one great servant of all, and that the only way to serve Him is to be a fellow servant with Him.THE SERVANT OF ALL
When Jesus told his disciples that the greatest in the kingdom of God must be the servant of all, He was not only describing what they were to be like, He was telling them what God is like.
He knew that whatever God expects any of us to be, He already is. Whatever He asks us to do, He already does.
He is the greatest in the kingdom of God. There is none greater. Therefore, He is the greatest servant of all.
WHY IS IT HARD TO BELIEVE?
We find this hard to believe because we have accepted Satan's lie that to be great is to be in a position where you lord it over others.
Because Satan believed that lie, he tried to exalt himself above God, and God had no choice but to cast him out of heaven.
TO REIGN OR TO SERVE?
In his epic poem, Paradise Lost, Milton has Satan saying to his minions in hell, "Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven."
No one with that kind of attitude could be happy in heaven because heaven is God's place and it's for servants only. That's why everyone who goes there is welcomed with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord."
GOD IS LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE SERVANTS WITH HIM!
God is not just looking for people who will do special acts of service for Him. He is looking for those who will be servants with Him in serving others.
Paul reminds us in Acts 17:25 that God is not served by human hands, because He doesn't need anything that we could give him.
What He wants is human beings whose hearts are one with His heart and whose hands are serving the needs of fellow human beings whom He loves - not serving them as we want to serve them, but as they need to be served.
