FEELINGS
George R. Foster

Good ones,
bad ones,
happy ones,
sad ones ...
Wouldn't it be nice
if we only had glad ones? But we don't.
They're sometimes
uplifting,
sometimes depressing,
one day joyful,
one day distressing.
Tears mixed with laughter,
joy mixed with pain,
we can't always
control them,
nor even explain.
Like spices they vary
and give life its flavor.
They help us stand firm.
They cause us to waver.
They're always with us.
We can't live without them.
The question is:
What will we do about them?
Neglect them?
Reject them?
Subject them?
Direct them?
Too often we coddle ...
Too often dissect them.
It's only thinking
God's thoughts every day,
by saying the words
God wants us to say,
by doing the things
God wants us to do,
by choosing when choosing
is the hard thing to do…
That our feelings are
conquered.
They learn to obey
the tough choices we make
as we live day by day.
Old habits give place
to new ones that heal
We're sustained by
the One who designed
us to feel.
